National Scholarships

Excel in Life.

The Honors Programs office coordinates the university nomination processes for several national scholarship programs that provide varying degrees of financial support for tuition, fees, and travel expenses, or even a modest stipend. More significant, however, is the immense prestige and national recognition that these awards bestow.  Students often find that being selected as a Rhodes, Goldwater, or Truman Scholar is only the beginning of an unimaginable future.

Current and former students interested in applying for national scholarships should work closely with the Honors Programs office to develop a long-term strategy for personal, professional, and academic development.  The Honors Programs office numerous workshops throughout the academic year, and students who wish to receive regular bulletins regarding National Scholarships opportunities can subscribe to the National Scholarships Listserv

Should I Apply?

All awards in the class provide immense prestige and national recognition.  Most applicants remark, however, that while the application process itself can be intense, it is an immeasurably valuable experience, no matter the outcome, as it requires one to reflect on his or her past and future, formulate a personal vision, and strive to become an innovative leader.

The Honors Programs office helps students to not only achieve their goals, but to define them, as well. Our professional staff publicizes these opportunities, actively seeks qualified candidates, coordinates rigorous selection processes, and individually advises nominated students as they prepare their application materials.

Am I the perfect candidate?

While individual scholarships seek specific qualities in applicants, most prestigious scholarships reward academic achievement, a demonstrated esteem for scholarship, leadership potential, commitment to the betterment of society, an interdisciplinary perspective, and an entrepreneurial approach to life.  Generally speaking, however, no "perfect" candidate exists, and no one is born a Rhodes or Truman Scholar.  As in life, success in a National Scholarship competition is found in the traditional manner: through hard work.

How do I prepare?

Students who achieve distinction as Marshall, Goldwater, or Udall Scholars have taken advantage of every opportunity afforded them at Texas A&M: they have taken a broad range of challenging courses, committed time to public service activities, participated in research, held (or created) significant leadership positions, and established lasting relationships with faculty. The Honors Programs provide these same opportunities for personal growth and intellectual development.

Needless to say, what makes one competitive for a National Scholarship also makes one highly competitive for graduate or professional school admissions, for the workplace, and for life in general.
