Academic Advising

Excel in Life.

The key feature of the Honors Programs are its dedicated, highly skilled advisors, many of whom possess advanced degrees and are participating members of a number of professional associations.  Honors Advisors can help motivated students develop a challenging curriculum, find on-campus resources to maintain their academic good standing, prepare for admission to professional or graduate school, or compete for national scholarships.

Honors Programs staff members also serve as advisors to a number of student groups, including the Honors Student Council, HIP Leaders, Honors Peer Leaders, pre-professional student groups, and a number of independent, recognized student organizations.

We encourage you to get to know our staff.  Better yet, we encourage you to come by Henderson Hall and meet us in person!

Advising Philosophy

Honors Advisors seek potential, foster growth, and promote achievement.  Honors students who have established a successful advising relationship with the Honors Programs office should...

        • know what resources are available through the Honors Programs office
        • seek out and make use of educational opportunities and resources
        • learn to evaluate and synthesize information in preparation for an uncertain future
        • establish and evaluate their own goals

Expectations of Honors Programs Advisors

Honors students who establish a successful advising relationship with the Honors Programs office can expect Honors Advisors to...

        • provide accurate information about Honors Programs policies and procedures
        • take time to listen to your thoughts, aspirations, concerns and interests
        • encourage and support your personal, professional and academic development
        • give you options and make suggestions; we do not make decisions for you
        • refer you to appropriate resources when our knowledge and experience won’t meet your needs
        • maintain and encourage professional demeanor
        • facilitate opportunities for you to engage dynamic faculty
        • be an advocate for your best interests
        • celebrate your accomplishments and achievements
