Summer is a great time for undergraduate research.  It provides the opportunity to engage in research at locations away from campus such as hospitals, parks, museums, government laboratories, or companies.  These can be full time, immersive research experiences or internships in which combine research with a professional learning experience in industry or non-profit corporations.

Planning for Summer Research
Summer research programs are competitive, requiring you to plan ahead to submit an effective application.  Additionally, many deadlines for application are in December or January.  You should therefore begin searching for opportunities in the fall semester.  Honors and Undergraduate Research and the Career Center jointly present workshops on Finding Summer Research and Internship Opportunities
, where students who have participated in summer programs provide advice on how to apply.  A surprising number of students find their internships through Google searches and word of mouth, so be sure to ask faculty and fellow students about opportunities they are aware of.  The Career Center also maintains an extensive list of summer opportunities and provides assistance in applying.  You will need at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member; be sure to ask early in the semester to give faculty a chance to get to know you well enough to write a good letter.

An internship is  major-related work expereince with a learning component.  These are most often found in private companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies.  The Texas A&M Career Center maintains an extensive list of internship opportunities and provides tools for online searching. To begin, go to HireAggies.com.  Internships can be found in the “Find Jobs” section. Register with the Career Center, fill out your profile and search for internships in the jobs tab. If you are interested in an international experience, work abroad opportunities are on the left menu.

Upcoming Deadlines

OAPPS is a staff office in the Immediate Office of the Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation (OAR).  OAPPS provides cross-program policy and programmatic support to OAR senior leadership and to OAR’s stationary source, mobile source, atmospheric program, and radiation / indoor air program offices.  Specific responsibilities and activities of the office are organized through six main practice areas including economics, science policy and research coordination, international activities, program tracking and management, Congressional and stakeholder engagement, and priority projects of senior OAR leadership.   

Volunteers will gain valuable experience in efforts to protect public health and the environment in concert with educational and research interests. Intern tasks and projects may include activities under the Clean Air Act and related authorities and activities that contribute to:
  • Developing regulations;
  • Environmental justice;
  • E-Discovery
  • Improving data accessibility
  • Synthesizing, compiling and updating information clearinghouses;
  • Developing and updating SharePoint sites and websites;
  • Compiling best practices guides;
  • Assisting with analyses and coordination of international, economics, research, science policy issues; and
  • Stakeholder engagement, communications and outreach, among other activities, as needed.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the NSF. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.  NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.  Students who are interested in applying for an NSF-REU should use the NSF-REU website to examine opportunities in the subject areas supported by various NSF units. Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science.

Bioinspired robotics is about designing robots that are inspired by natural systems such as insects, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Bioinspired robotics offers a truly interdisciplinary systems research challenge that encompasses biology, materials, mechanical design, control, sensors and actuators, power, electronics, and computer science among other topics. During this 10-week summer program, students will develop their research projects, attend research and development seminars and visit robotics research programs at local national labs.

REU participants are paired with Coastal Biologists at UNF and the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) and conduct mentored research projects related to their advisor’s expertise.  Prior to this, students will complete a 1-week orientation on performing research in Coastal Biology to prepare them for their directed research projects.  Students will also gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their project at a departmental-wide research poster mini-symposium.  Participants will attend research seminars and workshops on career skills in science.  Students may also have the opportunity to present their research findings at professional conferences.

Columbia Business School (CBS) is seeking outstanding applicants for the 2017 Summer Research Internship program.  The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and exposes the students to the world of business research. Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: Finance, Economics, Marketing, Management, Decision Sciences, Operations, Accounting, and Data Analytics.
This is a multi-disciplinary program and candidates from all backgrounds, including Business, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, the Physical Sciences, and the Social and Behavioral Sciences, are encouraged to apply. 
Prospective interns must have the following qualifications:
  • Enthusiasm for research and intellectual curiosity 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and/or econometrics
  • Behavioral projects in Marketing or Management require knowledge of SPSS and prior experience in a psychology laboratory
  • Quantitative projects in Accounting, Decision, Risk, & Operations, Finance and Economics, Management, and Marketing require strong programming skills:
    • STATA required for projects in Finance, Economics, and Management
    • Matlab, R or Python required for projects in Marketing or DRO
    • SAS or STATA required for projects in Accounting
    • Experience in Python or C/C++ is a plus
The internship program is designed for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior year and first-year Masters students.  Exceptional students from other classes are considered on a case-by-case basis.
The program runs from May 30, 2017 – August 4, 2017 (tentative dates).  On-campus housing and a stipend will be provided. Applications will be reviewed beginning mid-January and positions may be filled on a rolling basis.  The application process is highly competitive. The University of North Texas' SMART program brings multicultural under­graduate students to campus to participate in a ten­ week biomedical sciences project. As a participant you will become familiar with the varied disciplines and methodology used in biomedical research, as well as learn about opportunities for careers in the biomedical sciences. SMART scholars work with their faculty mentor in a research lab and meet in classroom sessions each week to study the physiological sciences. Scholars will receive a stipend and housing allowance for the duration of the program.

This 1½ day conference is aimed at faculty and academic professionals interested in the improvement, management, and promotion of undergraduate research and creative activities.  Faculty, undergraduate research program directors, and administrators will share ideas, strategies, and best practices around six themes.
Session Themes
  • Assessment: Strategies for evaluating undergraduate research projects, using data to improve the experience or providing feedback for funding support.
  • Diversity in Research: Effective strategies for promoting diversity-serving undergraduate research, undergraduate research that informs diversity issues, collaborations that have brought in diverging perspectives to undergraduate research.
  • High Impact Learning Strategies: Methods, approaches, courses and practices that have proven very effective in achieving learning outcomes that incorporate undergraduate research. This can include the retooling of existing courses, applied research in courses and imbedded research projects within courses.
  • Internationalization: Incorporating an international element to undergraduate research, including research-based travel, media-assisted collaboration, data exchange or the mechanics of organizing an international undergraduate research component.
  • Undergraduate Research Administration and Budgeting - Nuts and Bolts: Approaches that have proven effective in managing and organizing undergraduate research and/or in funding the means by which the research can be undertaken.  Budgeting innovations, successful central strategies, institutional support etc. are all applicable.
  • Undergraduate Research Collaborations : Examples of effective partnerships with undergraduate researchers, pairing strategies, team projects, the ethics of collaboration in undergraduate research.
