Scholarships For Incoming Freshmen


Endowed Competition

 
Eligibility:   To be considered for merit-based scholarships in the Endowed pool, students must meet the following criteria :
  • Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or graduate of an accredited US high school in spring, 2008.
  • Be enrolled for the Fall 2008 semester at Texas A&M University as a full-time student.
  • Have scored at least a 1300 on the SAT I (critical reading + math, with at least 600 in each) or 30 on the ACT (English + math, with a minimum 27 in each) or have attained Semifinalist or Commended standing in competitions sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation or College Board.
  • Submit a complete application, to be received in the Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships by December 15, 2007.
     
Terms:  
  • President's Endowed Scholarships:  $12,000 total - Annual stipend of $3,000 for four years of undergraduate study.
  • Lechner and McFadden Scholarships: $10,000 total - Annual stipend of $2,500 for four years of undergraduate study.
     
Additional Components:   Beyond the scholarship stipends, scholarship recipients in the Endowed Pool also receive the following benefits:
  • Additional $1,000 stipend for Texas A&M-sponsored Study Abroad Programs
  • Assured On-campus housing. Honors-eligible scholarship recipients may request placement in Lechner Honors Residence Hall. Assignments are made in order of scholarship acceptance date
  • Out-of-state tuition differential waived (approximate value of $8,250 per year)
  • May be supplemented by sponsorship through the National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • Recipients of President's Endowed and Lechner/McFadden Scholarships may be eligible for nomination to the Galen T. Brown and Terry Foundation for supplemental scholarship awards
     
Application Procedure:  

Given the large number of applications received, prospective applicants must adhere closely to all application procedures.

  1. Before beginning the application, please go through the Online Scholarship Application tips.
  2. Complete the application at http://www.applytexas.org/. To be considered for merit-based scholarships, prospective students must complete both an admissions application and a scholarships application.
  3. Deadline for submission of the online scholarship application is December 15, 2007; ALL supplementary application materials must also be received by that date:
     
   
    • Official high school transcript (Sent directly to the Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships).
    • SAT I /ACT scores (including writing portion) sent to Texas A&M University.
    • Student Profile Page (to be completed and submitted by the applicant's High School Counselor or Principal).

Please note the following:

  • Scholarship applications without any of the required components are considered incomplete and will not be considered scholarships at Texas A&M University
  • The Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships does not typically notify prospective applicants if their applications are incomplete
  • All award letters from the Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships will be mailed in March 2008.  No information or announcements about recipients are made prior to that mailing
  • Within each competition category, a student's test score is only one of many components considered in the review process. Consideration is given to academic achievement in a college preparatory curriculum within the context of the student's academic environment. Additional factors for selection include, but are not limited to, leadership, community service, special talents, first-generation college student status, and academic achievement under difficult circumstances.

College and Departmental Scholarships

 

More than 200 scholarships are awarded by a variety of individual colleges and academic departments at Texas A&M University.  The college or department that awards the scholarship establishes selection criteria, and the amounts of the scholarship awards vary.

Credentials of all admitted applicants in competition for sholarships coordinated through the Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships will be forwarded to and evaluated by by the appropriate college or department.  To claim a college or department-sponsored scholarship, the student must enroll in the corresponding college or department.

Application deadline is December 15, 2007.  Scholarship decisions are announced in April.

Other Sources of Financial Aid


Department of Student Financial Aid

The primary purpose of the Department of Student Financial Aid is to ensure that no student will be denied an opportunity for an education due to a lack of funds. To the extent that funds are available, Texas A&M University is committed to meeting the documented financial need of all eligible students making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree. The Opportunity Award is designed to encourage and promote academic success and furnish students the opportunity to pursue their educational goals at Texas A&M University. The Department of Student Financial Aid also offers opportunities through grants, scholarships, loans, and employment.

Corps of Cadets

The Corps of Cadets offers two scholarship opportunities. These 4-year awards are based on academic performance and demonstrated leadership in high school. Recipients must be members of the Corps of Cadets.
