Honors Plans
Engineering Scholars Program
The Engineering Scholars Program is
highly selective. It is a performance-based program in which academic focus
and leadership skill matter. High school applicants will need an SAT score
of 1350 (ACT score of 31) and must be in the top 10% of their graduating classes.
If you have proven skills in extracurricular activities in addition to an
outstanding academic record, you are a very good candidate for ESP.
Students already attending Texas A&M University must have a 3.6 GPR. Students
transferring from junior colleges or other universities will be considered
on an individual basis.
ESP students must attain a 3.5 GPR (3.4 if enrolled under catalogue 126 or
lower) to stay in the program. This GPR is based on all coursework, not just
engineering courses. The program involves six hours of honors courses, two
seminars and a three-hour research project.
In the first seminar, ESP students listen and watch men and women of influence
in industry, business, government and academia. They are luminaries and leaders,
movers and shakers that understand and change today's workplace. In the second
seminar, the "tables are turned" and ESP students make presentations.
Students learn the elements needed in writing and presenting technical papers.
They prepare themselves for the last requirements - the three-hour research
project with a faculty member.
ESP Requires:
2 hours from two one-semester-hour ESP seminars emphasizing engineering
practice in industry, professionalism, and research and development
programs.
3-6 hours for independent study with a faculty member.
A total of 18 honors hours, including those listed above, which can
include honors courses from any department on campus.
(This requirement is 11 hours for students enrolled in the honors
program prior to Summer/Fall 2005.)
