National Scholarship Competitions

Preliminary Applications

The Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships coordinates the application processes for several nationally-competitive scholarship competitions.  Please note that the following scholarships are for current undergraduate or graduate students or recent alumni.  Prospective transfer students and incoming freshman interested in applying for academic scholarships should visit the Academic Scholarships section of the OHPAS website.

Many National Scholarships require an institutional endorsement. Because endorsements are often limited in number by the sponsoring scholarship foundation, the Office of Honors Programs conducts preliminary selection competitions, the deadlines of which are usually several weeks or months prior to the actual scholarship deadline.

Check with Kyle Mox in the University Honors Program for specific scholarship application deadlines.   To automatically receive information on upcoming scholarship processes and informational workshops, subscribe to the Honors Listserv.  Additionally, students who wish to receive regular bulletins regarding National Scholarships opportunities and preparation should subscribe to the National Scholarships Listserv.

2009 Fulbright Program for U.S. Students

Download the Fulbright Information Sheet.

All currently enrolled students are to apply through their university and should contact their campus Fulbright Program Administrator (FPA), Kyle Mox, at 845 - 1957 or kemox@tamu.edu.   For detailed information and instructions on applying, visit http://www.us.fulbrightonline.org.

Please note the following deadlines:

Thursday 18 September 2008: On-campus Application Deadline

The majority of the application process is conducted via the Fulbright Online Application.  Prospective applicants must notify the FPA of their intent to apply before submitting a completed application .  To be considered complete, prospective applicants must also submit three hard-copy letters of recommendation*, a foregin language report (as necessary), and transcripts to room 101 of the Academic Building.  Applicants should also provide letters of affiliation, if available or relevant.

*Note on letters of recommendation - although recommenders may submit their letters via the online system, it is strongly encouraged that they first forward a print or electronic copy via email to the FPA well in advance of the campus deadline.  Letters that have been submitted to the online application system are nearly irretrevable, so they should not be uploaded until they are finalized.

Week of 29 September - 3 October 2008: On-Campus Screening Interviews

The Texas A&M University Fulbright Committee will conduct interviews to discuss the proposals, feasibility of projects, institutional cooperation, and overall quality of application of each prospective applicant. The interview will also include a language assessment as appropriate per country.

Although the Fulbright Commission requires that institutions forward every complete application that they receive, it does ask that campus selection committees assign a ranking to each candidate to indicate a candidate's overall strength.

After the screening interviews, the applications will be returned to the applicants for revision.

Monday 13 October 2008: Deadline for Revised (FINAL) Application

Final version of complete application is due. This should include any revisions made after the campus deadline and the campus interview process.  Once changes are complete, applicants will submit the revised application to the FPA via the online system. New references, transcripts and other supplemental documents are not required unless they have changed.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to communicate with the FPA frequently to ensure that all application materials are in order.

Friday 17 October 2008: National Fulbright Deadline

IIE, the organization which administers the Fulbright Grant Program, requires all applications to reach the national office by this date. Applications must be complete to be accepted and processed by IIE.
