What is expected from a Research Fellow?
AttenAttend all Research Fellows events (including, but not limited to)
- General meetings and workshops
- Honors convocation
- Research presentations
- Honors recognition ceremony (early May)
Present progress on research to Fellows and advisors 4 times during the academic year
- Fall research presentation (mid October)
- Spring research presentation (early February)
- Student Research Week — oral or poster presentation (late March)
- Symposium—the final research presentation (mid April)
Present research findings in an “honors worthy” senior thesis
- Follow the format and submission guidelines as described in the Thesis Manual.
- Adhere to guidelines for citing sources and labeling graphics as set by a reputable source, such as a journal or style manual, in an academic field appropriate to the student’s research.
- Develop thesis content as directed by Fellows faculty advisor.
Meet with Research Fellows faculty advisor regularly
- Meet with faculty advisor as required for reseach credits (485, 491, or 497), preferably at least once a week.
- Discuss progress on research and development of presentations and thesis.
Register for research credit
- Register for 3 credits in the fall semester and 3 credits in the spring semester. These could include 485 (directed studies), 491 (research), or 497 (independent honors studies) depending upon the courses a department offers. If more than one these is available in the department, it is best to use 491.
- If these 6 credits would be in excess of a student's degree requirements, the student should consult with the Associate Director for the Honors Programs to arrange an adjustment in the number of credits required.
Submit interim documents for review and present findings
- Submit progress report to the Research Fellows advisor (early December)
- Write an abstract as required for the Texas A&M University Student Research Week (March), and submit it to Honors Program Office.
- Participate in Texas A&M University Student Research Week with a poster presentation or an oral presentation.
Maintain 3.5 GPR
As a participant in an Honors program, Research Fellows must maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPR (3.4 if following Catalog 126 or below) through graduation. That cumulative GPR is required for students to receive the Research Fellows distinction at graduation and on their transcripts.
