What does a faculty advisor to a Fellow do?
A Research Fellow's thesis should reflect the quality of work expected from a Texas A&M University honors student and should be developed as a paper that could be published in a scholarly journal. The Research Fellow will depend on his faculty advisor to help him or her meet these high standards. A Research Fellow is accountable to his/her Research Fellows Advisor, and the Advisor must approve a student's Fellows thesis before it can be sent to the Honors Programs Advisory Committee. Therefore, a faculty advisor to a Research Fellow is strongly urged to participate actively in his or her student’s research, presentations, and thesis writing. This participation, more specifically, includes the following:Attending all Fellows advisor gatherings (or sending a representative if advisor cannot attend)
- Informational meeting for advisors (late August or early September)
- Honors convocation (mid September)
- Research presentations (one in the fall and one in the spring semesters on student’s research progress)
- Symposium (final research presentations in mid April)
- Honors recognition ceremony—optional (early May)
Moderating one group of research presentations
- Each Advisor will receive a presentation schedule at the beginning of the fall semester and will be asked to choose one set of presentations to moderate.
Evaluating progress on research and the thesis
- Provide written feedback on progress report (due early December)
- Comment on drafts of the thesis regularly
- Meet with the Fellow regularly (as required for 485, 491, or 497), preferably at least once a week
- Grade the Research Fellow on his/her research credits both semesters.
- Submit a grade for 6 hours of honors independent study within advisor’s department–six 485, 491, or 497 hours (3 fall/spring)
