Honor Societies
There are a number of discipline-specific and general honor societies sponsored by Texas A&M University, ranging from organizations which are solely honorific to honor societies which offer service to the campus and community, giving students the opportunity to develop leadership skills, academic networks, and social skills.
To aid students and universities in evaluating the merits of various honors societies, the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) was founded in 1925. It is the nation's only certifying agency for college and honor societies, and it sets standards for organizational excellence and for scholastic eligibility. Before joining any honors society, we encourage you to visit the ACHS website at: www.achsnatl.org .
Generally, if an honor society has been accepted for membership in ACHS, you can assume that it has met the high standards set by the Association and is therefore a fully-legitimate honor society. While this isn't the only factor you should consider in deciding whether or not to join an honors society, it can be a good place to start.
Should You Join an Honors Society?
Other factors you may want to consider if you have been invited to join an honor society include:
- Longevity – How long has the society and/or local chapter been in existence?
- Your Local Chapter – Is it an active chapter with regular meetings? Does it foster leadership training or support academic development among its members? Does it get involved to serve the community?
- Business Plan – In other words, does the organization exist primarily as a profit-making venture?
- Membership Fees – How expensive is it to join the society relative to other honor societies?
